Urlacher Credits Chiefs’ Toub for Bears’ Special Teams Dominance

Pro Football Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher recently shared insights into the coaching philosophy of Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub. Speaking ahead of the American Century Championship, Urlacher highlighted Toub’s significant impact during their time together with the Chicago Bears.

Urlacher, who will compete in the celebrity golf tournament from July 10-12 at Edgewood Tahoe, noted that Toub’s units were consistently ranked among the league’s elite. Toub is widely recognized for his role in developing return specialist Devin Hester, yet Urlacher emphasized that the unit’s success was rooted in detailed preparation and clear communication.

“They were so prepared,” Urlacher said, recalling that he would voluntarily attend special teams meetings to observe Toub’s strategies. He described the game plans as exceptional, specifically noting the success of trick plays and fakes that Toub deployed during games.

Toub served as the Bears’ special teams coordinator for eight seasons before joining Andy Reid’s staff in Kansas City in 2013. He currently holds the title of assistant head coach and special teams coordinator for the Chiefs. Urlacher attributed the high performance of the Chicago special teams to the clarity provided by the coaching staff, stating there was never any question regarding player assignments.

The American Century Championship, where Urlacher will seek to defeat rival Kevin Millar, will air on NBC and Peacock. The tournament offers a total prize purse of $750,000, with $150,000 awarded to the winner. The event has generated over $8 million for charitable causes since its inception.

The broadcast coverage will be provided by Comcast Corporation, the parent company of NBC. Shares of Comcast are currently trading at $23.38.
