Fox Analysts Criticize Pulisic Conduct After Early USMNT World Cup Exit

The United States men’s national team saw its World Cup journey come to a disappointing end with a 3-1 defeat to Belgium in the round of 16. The match and the tournament as a whole were marred by the performance and subsequent comments of star forward Christian Pulisic, sparking a significant backlash from media personalities.

Pulisic, once heralded as the centerpiece of American soccer, struggled to make an impact throughout the competition. He played only 45 minutes during the group stage due to a calf strain and was substituted in the 58th minute against Belgium after suffering an apparent foot injury. During his limited time on the pitch, he turned the ball over 11 times in the first half alone. Following the match, his comments to Fox Sports reporter Jenny Taft regarding the injury drew immediate scrutiny.

“Now I get time to rest, so hopefully it’ll be okay,” Pulisic told Taft. This sentiment was met with harsh criticism from Fox Corporation analysts Carli Lloyd and Landon Donovan. Lloyd, a former USWNT star, expressed her disappointment with Pulisic’s output during the tournament and later reacted sharply to his post-game interview, stating on social media, “You rest when your playing career is over. Period.”

Donovan, also a Fox Sports analyst, questioned Pulisic’s toughness. Reports suggested Pulisic may have requested the substitution, a notion Donovan found unacceptable for a knockout match. “You would have had to drag me off the field,” Donovan remarked, emphasizing that players should do whatever necessary to stay in critical games.

The intense media coverage of the USMNT’s performance highlights the high stakes involved for sports broadcasters. Fox Corporation, which holds significant broadcasting rights for major soccer tournaments, relies on deep tournament runs from high-interest teams like the United States to sustain viewership ratings. As of the latest market session, Fox Corporation shares were trading at $53.82, down 1.48% from the previous close. Additionally, parent company Comcast Corporation, which operates extensive sports coverage through its NBCUniversal platforms, was trading at $23.59, up 0.57% today.

What to watch

  • Future viewing figures for remaining World Cup matches on Fox following the U.S. elimination.
  • Upcoming quarterly earnings reports from Fox Corporation and Comcast Corporation for updates on sports segment revenue.
  • Pulisic’s medical updates and return timeline for club duties.
