Phillies’ Wheeler Voices Frustration Over All-Star Snub Following Dominant Outing

Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler did not hold back following his latest performance on the mound. In a game where he tied his career high with 14 strikeouts, Wheeler utilized the 4-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds to voice his displeasure regarding his exclusion from the National League All-Star roster.

Wheeler, who improved to 9-1 on the season, described the situation as frustrating and questioned the logic used by Major League Baseball officials. The veteran pitcher specifically took issue with the timing of the announcement, which came hours after the league named three other pitchers—Riley O’Brien, Jesús Luzardo, and Braxton Ashcraft—as replacements for the July 14 event in Philadelphia.

The 36-year-old indicated that his upcoming start schedule was the primary factor keeping him off the roster. Despite the league’s standard procedure regarding pitchers on turn, Wheeler argued that deserving players should receive recognition regardless of their regular-season rotation. He expressed willingness to pitch on short rest, noting that an inning of work would align with his normal throwing routine between starts.

Team support for Wheeler was evident during the postgame discussions. Outfielder Kyle Schwarber, who was selected for the National League roster and hit his major league-leading 31st home run during the contest, backed his teammate’s sentiments. Schwarber emphasized the importance of career accolades and the desire for players to feel acknowledged for their contributions during their limited time in the sport.

The Phillies continue to perform well at the gate and on the field, playing under the umbrella of Comcast Corporation, the media and technology conglomerate. Comcast Corporation (CMCSA), which owns NBC Sports Philadelphia—the broadcaster that aired Wheeler’s comments—has a market capitalization of approximately $83.5 billion. Shares of Comcast Corporation were trading at $23.41 during the session, down roughly 0.2% from the previous close.

What to watch

  • Wheeler’s next scheduled start against Detroit this weekend.
  • The National League roster activity prior to the July 14 All-Star game in Philadelphia.
