Kentucky’s Pope Rules Out Crawford Hire Due to NBC Contract Obligations

University of Kentucky head coach Mark Pope has provided clarity regarding the final open spot on his coaching staff, effectively ending speculation that former NBA guard Jamal Crawford would fill the role. While Crawford had been linked to the Wildcats’ bench, contractual commitments with a major media partner will prevent the transition for the time being.

Speaking to local media, Pope indicated that Crawford remains under contract with NBC. “Jamal’s still got two years left on his NBC contract,” Pope stated, noting their long-standing friendship. Pope suggested that while Crawford has an interest in coaching, the timing is not currently viable due to his existing broadcasting duties.

Crawford currently serves as a game analyst for Comcast Corporation, the parent company of NBC Sports. Alongside calling games with Reggie Miller and Mike Tirico, Crawford is also assisting with his son’s high school team.

The development keeps Crawford in the broadcast booth rather than moving to the collegiate sidelines. Comcast Corporation (CMCSA), the media and technology conglomerate that employs Crawford, saw its shares trade lower recently. The stock closed at $23.19, reflecting a decline of 1.14% from the previous close of $23.46. The company holds a market capitalization of approximately $83.5 billion and operates within the Communication Services sector.

Regarding the vacancy on the Kentucky staff, Pope emphasized that the university will prioritize finding the correct fit rather than simply filling the seat. He left open the possibility that the position could remain unfilled for the upcoming season if the right candidate does not emerge.
