Pogacar Claims Tour de France Lead After Dominant Stage Six Performance
Peloton Interactive, Inc. sector watchers and cycling enthusiasts witnessed a decisive shift in the Tour de France standings Thursday, as Tadej Pogacar reclaimed the overall leader’s yellow jersey with a commanding performance on the Col du Tourmalet. The stage marked the first significant mountain test of this year’s three-week race.
Riding for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Pogacar, 27, distanced himself from the competition on the iconic climb. By the summit, he had opened a substantial gap of 30 seconds over his primary rival, Jonas Vingegaard of Visma-Lease a Bike. The deficit for other contenders was even larger, with Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM) losing one minute and 45 seconds during the ascent.
Pogacar ultimately finished the 186.2km stage from Pau to Gavarnie-Gedre two minutes and 38 seconds ahead of Vingegaard. The result reshuffles the general classification, placing Pogacar in the lead with a margin of two minutes and 42 seconds over the Dane. Pogacar’s teammate, Isaac del Toro, rounded out the podium spots for the stage, sitting third overall.
The stage proved disastrous for previous leader Torstein Traeen of Norway. The Uno-X Mobility rider crashed and ultimately abandoned the race after being diagnosed with a concussion and multiple rib fractures. Pogacar now leads the race by a significant margin, moving a step closer to a potential record-equalling fifth Tour title.
Elsewhere in the standings, British rider Tom Pidcock dropped to 15th place, trailing by nearly 10 minutes. Pidcock attributed the performance to a disruption in his training schedule due to illness. Egan Bernal, riding for Netcompany Ineos, is now the top-ranked rider for his team in 11th place.
What to watch
- General classification battles as the race continues through the mountain stages.
