World Cup Viewership Surges in US, England Match Tops Domestic Audience

Recent World Cup 2026 knockout stage matches have generated significant television audiences in the United States, highlighting the growing interest in soccer ahead of the 2030 tournament. Data indicates that international matchups are capturing the attention of American viewers, with figures approaching those typically reserved for domestic sports staples.

The round of 16 clash between England and Mexico, which took place on Sunday evening, amassed an audience of approximately 44.842 million viewers across Fox, Telemundo, and Peacock. The broadcast, which peaked near 45 million viewers, outdrew the United States’ own match against Belgium played the following day. The US contest, which saw Belgium advance with a 4-1 victory, drew 42 million viewers according to NBC Sports. While the American team’s performance garnered significant attention, the England-Mexico fixture proved to be the larger draw.

These numbers place the World Cup matches in a competitive bracket with traditional American sports. The viewership totals for both games are comparable to the average figures for the NFL’s AFC and NFC Championship games earlier this year, which drew approximately 47 million viewers. The strong performance serves as a positive indicator for FIFA’s objective to expand the sport’s footprint within the US market.

Comcast Corporation plays a central role in this viewership surge through its properties. As the parent company of NBCUniversal, Comcast operates Telemundo and the streaming platform Peacock, which accounted for 23.1 million of the viewers during the England match. Comcast Corporation (CMCSA) saw its shares trade lower today, with the stock price at $23.19, representing a decline of 1.14% from the previous close of $23.46.

Looking ahead, the financial landscape for broadcast rights appears poised for substantial growth. Negotiations for the 2030 World Cup television rights are currently underway, with US broadcasters expected to pay around $2 billion. This figure marks a sharp increase from the approximately $485 million deal secured for the current edition.
