Chicago Cubs Eye First-Round Talent as MLB Draft Kicks Off New Schedule

Major League Baseball’s annual draft begins Saturday, marking a shift in timing as the event moves to the weekend prior to the All-Star Game. The Chicago Cubs hold the 23rd overall selection in the first round, followed by additional picks at No. 62, No. 75, and No. 98 throughout the opening three rounds. The extra selection at 75th was acquired as compensation after the departure of Kyle Tucker.

Chicago enters the event with a bonus pool allocation of $9,644,100 for the first ten rounds. Under MLB rules, teams can exceed this figure by up to five percent by paying a financial penalty, a strategy the Cubs’ front office has utilized historically. Based on this allowed overage, the club’s expected spending ceiling for signing bonuses in the top ten rounds is approximately $10,126,305. For selections after the tenth round, any bonus up to $150,000 does not impact the pool, though Chicago dipped into its pool funds last year to sign 14th-rounder Kaemyn Franklin and 17th-rounder Logan Poteet.

The league is utilizing a multi-platform broadcast strategy for this year’s coverage. The first 90 minutes of the event, spanning the first ten picks, will air on NBC and Peacock. Since the Cubs do not select until 23rd, their first pick will fall under the subsequent coverage window on MLB Network, MLB.com, and MLB.tv, which runs through the remainder of the first round. Rounds two through four will follow via online streams, while the remainder of the draft (rounds 5 through 20) is scheduled for Sunday via conference call.

While speculation regarding specific targets remains fluid, some analysts have linked left-handed pitcher Mason Edwards from USC to the Cubs. However, recent reports suggest Edwards’s stock is rising, potentially placing him out of reach for the 23rd selection. The organization’s final decision will likely depend heavily on which prospects slide out of the top 20 picks.

The draft schedule provides a significant viewership window for league partners, including Comcast Corporation. As the parent company of NBCUniversal and the owner of the MLB Network, Comcast stands to benefit from the extended broadcast hours and cross-platform coverage involving Peacock and regional sports networks.

What to watch

  • Markets in motion: Comcast Corporation (CMCSA) is currently trading at $23.46, up 0.42%.
  • Selection strategy: Whether the Cubs utilize their bonus pool flexibility to sign top talent who falls due to signability concerns.
  • Future assets: The development of the extra draft capital gained via the Kyle Tucker compensation.
