Colombian Federation Condemns Threats Against World Cup Midfielder Campaz

The Colombian Football Federation has publicly denounced threats made against national team player Jaminton Campaz following the team’s elimination from the World Cup. The governing body has called on the country’s Attorney General to investigate and sanction those responsible for intimidating the athlete and his family.

Colombia’s tournament run concluded in the round of 16 after a 0-0 draw with Switzerland that extended into extra time and a subsequent penalty shootout. Campaz, an attacking midfielder currently playing for Argentine club Rosario Central, generated a significant scoring opportunity in the 115th minute. After intercepting a misplaced pass from Swiss veteran Granit Xhaka, Campaz failed to direct his left-footed shot on target during the critical phase of the match. Despite converting his attempt during the penalty shootout, the missed opportunity in extra time made him a target for harassment.

The Federation emphasized that athletes should not face intimidation while representing the country on an international stage. The organization declared its full solidarity with Campaz, his family, and the entire national delegation, urging swift legal action against the aggressors.

The match and the pivotal moment involving Campaz were broadcast globally, including on networks operated by Fox Corporation. As a major entity in the communication services and entertainment sectors, Fox Corporation operates extensive sports programming segments. Fox Corporation is currently trading at $54.12, reflecting a 2.51% increase from the previous close of $52.79. The company holds a market capitalization of approximately $23.46 billion.

What to watch

  • Statements from the Attorney General of the Nation regarding the status of the investigation into the threats.
  • Updates from the Colombian Football Federation regarding player safety protocols.
