World Cup Ratings Surge Drives Viewership for Spanish-Language Broadcasts

The ongoing World Cup tournament has revealed a significant shift in U.S. viewing habits, with a growing number of English-speaking fans choosing to watch matches on Spanish-language broadcasts. Despite language barriers, many viewers are opting for the coverage offered by Comcast Corporation’s Telemundo over traditional English-language options.

Viewership data underscores this trend. While U.S. Census figures indicate that approximately 20% of the population is Hispanic, Telemundo reports that Nielsen ratings show nearly half of World Cup viewers in the U.S. have watched at least part of the tournament in Spanish. This crossover appeal is attributed to several factors, including the renowned commentary style of Andrés Cantor and the network’s decision to avoid cutting away to commercial breaks during hydration breaks, allowing fans to see continuous game action.

Fox Corporation continues to draw massive audiences for its English-language coverage. The network recently reported that the match between the U.S. and Belgium reached a peak viewership of approximately 41 million viewers, making it the most-watched soccer telecast in U.S. history. Fox holds the rights to the English-language broadcasts, offering games on Fox and FS1.

Financially, the parent companies of these networks are navigating a dynamic market. Comcast Corporation is currently trading at $23.35, up 0.3% from the previous close, with a market capitalization of roughly $83.5 billion. Meanwhile, Fox Corporation shares are priced at $53.74, an increase of 0.83%, giving the company a market cap of about $23.5 billion.

Industry observers suggest the strong performance of both language broadcasts could influence future rights negotiations. There is speculation that the rights for the 2030 World Cup may package English and Spanish television rights together, a departure from the separate deals established for the current tournament.

What to watch

  • Future media rights bidding processes for the 2030 World Cup.
  • Quarterly earnings reports from Comcast Corporation and Fox Corporation for subscriber and advertising revenue figures.
  • Viewership data for the remainder of the tournament compared to previous years.
