Merlier Sprints to Stage 8 Victory as Pogacar Retains Tour de France Lead

Belgian sprinter Tim Merlier secured his second consecutive stage win at the Tour de France on Saturday, claiming victory in Stage 8. The 180-kilometer trek from Périgueux to Bergerac concluded in a bunch sprint, where Merlier outpaced Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay and Dutch rider Olav Kooij to the finish line. All three riders were credited with the same time of 3 hours, 52 minutes, and 50 seconds.

While the sprinters battled for the stage win, the general classification standings remained unchanged. Defending champion Tadej Pogacar retained the yellow jersey, finishing safely in the main pack. The four-time champion maintains a comfortable lead of 2 minutes and 42 seconds over his primary rival, two-time winner Jonas Vingegaard. Pogacar’s teammate, Isaac del Toro, currently sits in third place overall.

The stage took place under sweltering conditions as a heatwave continued to impact the region. In the final kilometers, Mathieu van der Poel worked aggressively to position his teammate Jasper Philipsen for the win. However, their move proved premature, allowing Merlier to time his final sprint perfectly for his fifth career Tour de France stage victory.

Competitors now face a hilly route from Malemort to Ussel for Sunday’s Stage 9. The race is scheduled to conclude with its traditional finish in Paris on July 26.

The event highlights the ongoing global interest in competitive cycling and endurance sports, a sector that intersects with the broader leisure and fitness industry. Connected fitness equipment manufacturers, such as Peloton Interactive, Inc., continue to offer products that allow users to train indoors similar to professional cyclists. Peloton shares were recently trading at $5.86.

What to watch
