Netflix Secures Exclusive Streaming Rights for 2026 MLB Home Run Derby
The 2026 MLB Home Run Derby is set to take place on Monday, July 13, at 7 p.m. CT, marking a significant shift in how the event is distributed to audiences. As a result of Major League Baseball’s new television contracts, the contest will be broadcast exclusively on Netflix. This move removes the event from traditional linear television, requiring viewers to subscribe to the streaming platform to watch the eight participants compete at Citizens Bank Park.
The lineup for this year includes notable sluggers such as Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. As members of the hometown Philadelphia Phillies, both players are expected to draw significant attention from the crowd. Harper enters the contest with a history of success in this format, having won the 2018 Derby at Nationals Park, while Schwarber finished as the runner-up that year and also participated in 2022. The field also includes Willson Contreras, giving Chicago Cubs fans a reason to watch two former World Series champions from the 2016 roster.
Beyond the roster, the league has implemented a new format for the 2026 event. Instead of the traditional timed rounds, players will be limited by a specific number of swings: 20 in the first round and 15 in both the second and final rounds. Every swing counts toward the allotment, but a “bonus” rule allows a player to continue swinging if they hit a home run on their final attempt of a round. The top four totals from the first round will advance to the semifinals, seeded based on performance to determine the finalists.
This exclusive streaming deal highlights the evolving media rights landscape for professional sports. While Netflix takes center stage for the Derby, traditional sports media remains a critical component of the ecosystem. Fox Corporation, which operates extensive news and sports programming segments, continues to be a major player in broadcasting baseball and other live sports. The company’s stock was recently trading at $55.90, reflecting the ongoing value investors place on established sports media assets.
