Marcus Plunkett Qualifies for British Open After Asian Tour Run
Former Army officer Marcus Plunkett has secured a spot in the British Open, marking the first major championship start of his career. Plunkett, who previously lost his Korn Ferry Tour status, earned his place at Royal Birkdale by tying for fourth at the Open qualifier held at Dundonald Links in Scotland. He posted rounds of 69 and 72 for a total of 141, finishing one stroke clear of a five-way playoff for the final qualifying position.
The Nease High School and West Point graduate has found recent success competing internationally. With five top-15 finishes in seven starts across the Asian Tour and Asian Development Tour, Plunkett currently sits 20th on the Order of Merit. His performance this season comes after a challenging PGA Tour Q-School process, where a weather-shortened event ended his chances of advancing to the final stage despite being in contention.
Plunkett will begin his campaign at Birkdale on Thursday, grouped with Naoyuki Katoaka of Japan and Baard Bjoernevik Skogen of Norway. The first round tee time is set for 11:10 a.m. EDT.
Meanwhile, Zach Johnson has confirmed he will use his exemption from winning the Senior Players Championship to compete in the following year’s Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. Johnson, who recently won the Kaulig Companies Championship at Firestone Country Club by six strokes, expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the Stadium Course. The event will be broadcast across various platforms, including those operated by media conglomerates such as Comcast Corporation, which holds a significant market presence in the communication services sector.
What to watch
- Plunkett’s performance at the British Open relative to his Asian Tour form.
