R&A Weighs Schedule Adjustments for Open Championship Amid World Cup Final Overlap
Potential scheduling conflicts are looming for golf broadcasters this summer, as the final round of The Open Championship may overlap with the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. The R&A, the governing body for golf outside the U.S., is considering logistical adjustments to ensure both events can capture maximum viewership without direct competition.
The complication arises if the England national team advances to the World Cup final, which would coincide with the closing round at Royal Birkdale on Sunday, July 19. While organizers are currently proceeding with the standard schedule, R&A CEO Mark Darbon indicated that moving tee times earlier is a possibility to avoid a head-to-head clash with the soccer match.
“We’ve been doing a lot of thinking about this,” Darbon noted, emphasizing that no changes will be made until England’s semifinal result is known.
Under the current timeline, the championship is projected to conclude at 6:40 p.m. local time (1:40 p.m. ET). This schedule theoretically allows for a three-hole aggregate playoff to finish before the World Cup final kicks off at 3 p.m. ET from Met Life Stadium in New Jersey. Darbon stated that while there are no immediate plans to alter the schedule, the situation remains under review.
The broadcast landscape for these events involves major media rights holders. Comcast Corporation (CMCSA) operates through segments that include extensive media and platform services, positioning it as a key stakeholder in sports broadcasting.
What to watch
- England’s World Cup semifinal result, which will determine if the R&A implements schedule changes.
