Fox Sees MLB All-Star Viewership Surge 22% Ahead of World Cup Semifinal Lead-In
Fox Corporation reported a significant rebound in viewership for the MLB All-Star Game, with the Tuesday night broadcast averaging 8.79 million viewers. This figure represents a 22% increase compared to the 7.2 million viewers who tuned in for the event last year, marking the highest audience for the Midsummer Classic since 2018.
The spike in engagement occurred despite the absence of high-profile athletes such as Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge, as well as several top-tier pitchers. Analysts point to the scheduling advantage provided by the FIFA Men’s World Cup semifinal between Spain and France earlier that afternoon. Preliminary data indicates that the soccer match averaged 11.46 million viewers, providing a robust lead-in audience that likely carried over to the evening baseball broadcast from Philadelphia.
The ratings performance allows Major League Baseball to reclaim its status as the most-watched all-star event among major U.S. professional sports. The NBA had recently claimed that distinction earlier this year after shifting its format to a round-robin tournament and moving the broadcast to NBC Sports platforms, owned by Comcast Corporation. The NBA All-Star Game in February drew 8.8 million viewers, nearly double its previous figures. However, when excluding Spanish-language broadcasts, the MLB event narrowly edged out the NBA, averaging 8.675 million viewers against the NBA’s 8.46 million.
Beyond broadcast numbers, the All-Star festivities generated strong commercial activity. MLB reported a 45% increase in merchandise sales at the All-Star Village fan festival compared to the previous year, setting a new event record. Overall merchandise sales, including venues and online channels, matched records established during the 2022 event in Los Angeles. Additionally, the All-Star Village at the Pennsylvania Convention Center attracted 111,616 attendees, the highest total in four years.
