Tomlin Rights Retained by Steelers as NBC Pundit Role Looms

Speculation regarding a potential return to the sidelines for Mike Tomlin has intensified following comments by defensive lineman Cam Heyward. During an appearance on the “Not Just Football” podcast, Heyward asked former coach Jon Gruden about the mechanics of acquiring Tomlin via trade. Tomlin, who recently stepped down, is slated to join NBC Sports’ “Football Night in America” as a studio analyst for the 2026 season. However, the Pittsburgh Steelers retain his contractual rights through 2027, a result of the three-year extension he signed in June 2024.

Consequently, any franchise interested in securing Tomlin’s services before his contract expires would be required to negotiate compensation with Pittsburgh rather than hiring him directly. This dynamic places the Steelers in a position to potentially recoup assets if other NFL teams act aggressively to fill perceived coaching vacancies.

Market observers are identifying the New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Cincinnati Bengals as organizations that could face sufficient pressure in 2026 to consider such a move. The Jets are coming off a 3-14 campaign under Aaron Glenn and face uncertainty at the quarterback position. Meanwhile, the Colts, led by Shane Steichen, hold a 25-26 career record and have struggled to maintain consistency late in seasons.

Tampa Bay presents a different scenario, as Todd Bowles navigates the post-Mike Evans era after missing the playoffs. In the AFC North, the Bengals have missed the postseason for three consecutive years. If these regimes falter early in the 2026 cycle, the demand for a proven commodity like Tomlin could test the value of the Steelers’ retained rights.

Tomlin’s transition to media will involve Comcast Corporation, the parent company of NBC Sports. Comcast shares were recently trading at $24.10, up 2.55% from the previous close. The company has a market capitalization of approximately $85.6 billion and operates in the Communication Services sector. As Tomlin assumes his studio duties, his visibility will be supported by Comcast’s extensive media infrastructure.
