Comcast’s NBCUniversal Set for Pivotal Open Championship Broadcast Weekend

The third round of the Open Championship is set to deliver high drama at Royal Birkdale, with Comcast Corporation’s NBCUniversal platforms providing extensive live coverage. As the tournament moves into “Moving Day,” the leaderboard remains tightly packed, setting the stage for a crucial broadcast day for the media conglomerate.

Australian golfer Lucas Herbert seized the lead on Friday with a tournament-best round of 62, putting him at 8-under par. Despite his strong performance, Herbert holds a slim two-stroke advantage over a chasing pack that includes Ryan Gerard, Cameron Young, and surprise contender Jackson Suber. The congestion at the top of the board suggests significant volatility for Saturday’s viewership numbers.

The narrative surrounding the event also involves major stars attempting to close the gap. Bryson DeChambeau sits three shots back after a two-stroke penalty, while Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, and Tommy Fleetwood are four strokes off the pace. Sam Burns joined Herbert as one of the few players to card a 62, buoyed by a spectacular hole-out from a bunker on the 18th.

Comcast will handle the domestic broadcast duties across its portfolio. The action begins early Saturday morning at 5:00 AM ET on USA Network, with coverage shifting to NBC from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM ET. Streaming will be available exclusively via Peacock. The same broadcast structure applies for Sunday’s final round, with USA Network airing early coverage before NBC takes over for the conclusion.

The financial performance of Comcast’s Media segment is closely watched by investors, particularly as live sports remain a key driver for cable subscriptions and streaming platform adoption. As of the previous close, Comcast traded at $23.79, reflecting a decline of 1.37%.

What to watch

  • NBCUniversal’s viewership ratings for the weekend rounds amid a congested leaderboard.
  • Subscriber growth trends for the Peacock streaming platform during major golf events.
  • Upcoming quarterly earnings reports for Comcast’s Media segment.
