McIlroy Criticizes DeChambeau Over Rules Incident at The Open

Tensions flared at Royal Birkdale as Comcast Corporation-affiliated broadcasts continued coverage of The Open Championship. Following the third round on Saturday, July 18, Rory McIlroy did not hold back regarding his views on Bryson DeChambeau’s conduct during a rules assessment the previous day.

The controversy originated on the fifth hole during the second round, where DeChambeau’s ball landed in deep grass. McIlroy, observing from the players’ lounge, noted that the gathering of players immediately suspected an issue as DeChambeau approached his ball. “As soon as he made his step into the ball, we all sort of looked at each other and were like, ‘That didn’t seem right,'” McIlroy stated.

Officials subsequently determined that DeChambeau had violated Rule 8.1 by unintentionally improving his lie. The ruling resulted in a two-stroke penalty, turning a bogey into a double-bogey and impacting his standing near the top of the leaderboard. The decision followed a lengthy review process, including a visit to the location of the infraction.

McIlroy expressed strong disapproval of how the situation was managed, suggesting the behavior was intended to draw attention. He characterized the prolonged ordeal as an attempt to “hold the tournament hostage.” The 2014 champion remarked that the spectacle was not a favorable appearance for the sport.

The resolution of the penalty was delayed significantly, with Saturday tee times not being confirmed until approximately 11 p.m. local time. Following the ruling, reports indicated DeChambeau retreated to the driving range and contemplated withdrawing from the event.

Comcast Corporation was trading at $23.79 at the time of writing, down 1.37%.

What to watch

  • Final round pairings and tee times following the delayed schedule.
  • Comments from tournament officials regarding the enforcement of Rule 8.1.
  • DeChambeau’s performance in the final round following the penalty assessment.
