NBC Sports’ Tirico Takes On Spotter Role at Open Championship

In an unusual move for a network’s lead play-by-play announcer, Comcast Corporation’s NBC Sports star Mike Tirico traded the broadcast booth for a walk inside the ropes during the opening rounds of the Open Championship. While USA Network carried the live coverage from Royal Birkdale on Friday, Tirico utilized the downtime to step into a production role typically reserved for junior staff members.

Tirico served as a “spotter” for the broadcast team, tracking Bryson DeChambeau’s group throughout their round. Rather than preparing for his weekend commentary duties, the veteran broadcaster was equipped with an earpiece and microphone to relay real-time information to the production truck. His responsibilities included communicating shot sequences, club selections, and the precise location of golf balls to ensure the telecast maintained accuracy and flow.

“You help the people up there in the truck,” Tirico explained, noting the necessity of calling out specific details like which player is hitting next and the outcome of every shot. The position is a foundational role in golf production, often serving as an entry point for recent college graduates aiming to break into sports media.

Tirico clarified that his participation was driven by a desire to better understand the operational mechanics of a golf broadcast. By learning the logistics behind the scenes, he aims to enhance his performance when he returns to the microphone for the weekend coverage. The assignment placed him in a prime position to observe the major storylines of the tournament, including DeChambeau’s two-shot penalty and a notable performance by Scottie Scheffler.

Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA) was trading down approximately 1.37% by the afternoon, with shares near $23.79. The media and technology giant, which operates the NBCUniversal segment including NBC Sports and Golf Channel, holds a market capitalization of roughly $85.6 billion.

What to watch

  • Look for Tirico’s return to the play-by-play role as NBC transitions to live weekend coverage.
  • Watch for future quarterly results from Comcast regarding its Media and Studios segments.
