World Cup Final poised to deliver record viewership for Telemundo, says NBCUniversal exec

Sunday’s championship match between Argentina and Spain is shaping up to be a historic draw for Spanish-language audiences in the United States, according to a senior executive at Comcast Corporation’s NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises. Miguel Lorenzo, the SVP of Sports Content, characterized the upcoming showdown as potentially “the greatest World Cup final ever,” citing a convergence of compelling storylines that could push ratings to new heights.

The matchup offers a stark contrast in generations and narratives. For Argentina, the focus remains on Lionel Messi, whom Lorenzo described as arguably the greatest player of all time. Opposing him is Lamine Yamal, the Spanish star widely viewed as the sport’s next major talent. Beyond individual players, Lorenzo noted the historical weight of the contest, marking the first final between the defending World Cup champion and the reigning European League champion. Both nations entered the tournament as favorites.

The 2026 tournament has proven to be a significant ratings driver for both Telemundo and Fox, the English-language rights holder. An expanded field of teams and strategic scheduling across North American time zones have contributed to a string of viewership records. Last week’s semi-final rounds attracted substantial audiences, with the Spain-France match drawing 9.8 million viewers and Argentina-England reaching 11.4 million across linear television and Peacock.

While the 3:00 p.m. ET start time for Sunday’s final has drawn some criticism for falling outside prime time, Lorenzo expressed confidence that the quality of the matchup would transcend the schedule. He emphasized that modern media consumption habits allow fans to tune in via mobile devices and connected platforms from anywhere. Telemundo plans an extensive production effort, deploying correspondents to both Spain and Argentina to complement coverage from the stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Comcast Corporation (CMCSA) traded at $23.79 on Friday, down 1.37% from the previous close.
