World Cup Final vs. Super Bowl Viewership Shows Global vs. Domestic Divide

A comparison of television audiences for the FIFA World Cup final and the Super Bowl highlights the vast difference in global reach between soccer’s premier event and American football’s championship. While the Super Bowl remains the dominant annual broadcast in the United States, the World Cup final consistently draws a significantly larger cumulative international audience.

Domestic viewership data illustrates the contrast in regional popularity. The 2022 World Cup final, which featured Argentina defeating France in a penalty shootout, attracted nearly 26 million U.S. viewers. English-language coverage on FOX averaged 16.78 million viewers, while Spanish-language network Telemundo drew approximately nine million across linear and digital platforms. This marked a substantial increase from the 2018 final, with FOX seeing its audience rise from 11.44 million viewers and Telemundo reporting a 65% surge. Notably, these figures were achieved despite a 10 a.m. ET start time.

In contrast, the Super Bowl consistently surpasses 100 million U.S. viewers. Super Bowl LIX in 2025 set a record with 127.7 million average viewers and a peak of 137.7 million during the second quarter. Super Bowl LX in 2026 averaged 125.6 million viewers across Comcast Corporation’s NBC, Peacock, and Telemundo platforms, making it the second-most-watched edition in history.

On a global scale, the World Cup final is unrivaled among single-day sporting events. FIFA reported that the 2022 final reached approximately 1.5 billion people worldwide via television, streaming, and out-of-home viewing. The match garnered a live in-home television audience of 570.8 million viewers.
