Scheffler Misses Out on Claret Jug Despite Late Rules Break at Royal Birkdale

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler finished tied for fourth at the British Open, concluding his week at Royal Birkdale with a 3-under 67. Despite strong ball-striking that kept him in contention, the tournament ultimately slipped away due to unfortunate bounces on the back nine.

Scheffler started the final round six strokes off the pace but mounted an early charge, carding three birdies in his first five holes to climb the leaderboard. He reached 8 under par following a 15-foot birdie putt on the 12th, positioning himself for a potential late surge.

However, momentum shifted on the 13th and 14th holes. A tee shot on the 13th found a deep hole in the rough, leading to a bogey, while a seemingly perfect drive on the 14th kicked left into a pot bunker, stalling another opportunity for birdie. “Little stuff like that over the course of the week tends to add up,” Scheffler remarked.

Drama continued on the par-5 17th, where a wayward tee shot appeared lost. However, the ball was identified as entering a temporary immovable obstruction (TIO) near a hospitality structure. Per the rules, Scheffler was granted a free drop 94 yards from the hole. He capitalized on the relief, hitting his wedge to 10 feet and sinking the birdie putt.

While the birdie on 17 provided momentary hope, Scheffler was unable to force a playoff, missing his subsequent attempts. He now holds top-four finishes in three of the four majors this season.
