2026 World Cup Final Draws Record U.S. Audience, Surpassing 61 Million Viewers

The 2026 FIFA World Cup final has solidified soccer’s standing in the American media landscape, delivering a viewership total that rivals the nation’s most significant sporting events. Spain’s extra-time victory over Argentina averaged more than 61.5 million viewers across U.S. television, marking the largest audience for a soccer match in the country’s history.

The view was split between two primary broadcasters. Fox Corporation recorded an average of 38.94 million viewers for its English-language coverage, while Spanish-language network Telemundo contributed an additional 22.6 million viewers, according to preliminary data. The combined figure represents the highest television viewership in the United States since February’s Super Bowl LX.

For Fox, the event delivered strong engagement metrics beyond the average. The network’s viewership peaked at 51.69 million during the match, with an average match-only audience of 42.5 million. The broadcast stands as the most-watched non-NFL telecast on any network since Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.

The success of the final capped a record-breaking tournament for Fox. The network averaged 7.74 million viewers throughout the 2026 World Cup, a 116% increase compared to the 2022 tournament held in Qatar. This surge is attributed in part to the scheduling shift; the 2022 event was held in the late autumn due to climate conditions in the host country, whereas the 2026 tournament returned to a traditional summer window.

Financial markets are currently watching Fox Corporation closely as the network leverages this sports content. Shares of Fox were trading at $57.57 on Tuesday, up 0.26% from the previous close, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately $24.14 billion. The company operates within the Communication Services sector and relies heavily on live sports programming to drive viewership across its Cable Network Programming and Television segments.

Industry analysts suggest that this historic viewership will likely impact future rights negotiations. FIFA has yet to sell the broadcast rights for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups, and the increased American interest adds value to those packages, despite the time-zone challenges expected for future tournaments.
