Comcast’s Telemundo Notches Record Viewership During World Cup 2026

Comcast’s Telemundo Notches Record Viewership During World Cup 2026

Comcast Corporation secured a major victory in the media ratings battle as its Spanish-language network, Telemundo, delivered historic audience numbers throughout the FIFA World Cup 2026. The tournament, held from June 11 to July 19, resulted in the most-watched soccer match ever on Spanish-language television in the United States.

Spain’s victory over Argentina in the final on Sunday attracted a Total Audience Delivery of 23.9 million viewers across Telemundo and Peacock. This match capped off a 39-day tournament that saw significant growth compared to the 2022 Qatar event. Across the 104 matches played, Telemundo averaged 6.3 million viewers per game, marking a 143% increase from the averages recorded four years prior.

The momentum accelerated as the tournament progressed. Mexico’s Round of 16 match against England on July 5 drew 23.2 million viewers, securing the spot as the second most-watched soccer match in Spanish-language media history. Audience levels surged during the knockout rounds, with 42 games reaching at least 6 million viewers, a sharp contrast to the 2022 tournament where only two matches hit that threshold. Additionally, the third-place match between France and England garnered 7.7 million viewers, up 225% from the equivalent fixture in 2022.

A significant driver of this growth was a strategic shift toward digital platforms. Streaming accounted for 48% of Telemundo’s Total Audience Delivery during the tournament, rising from 30% in 2022. The average minute audience on Peacock and Telemundo’s streaming platforms reached 3 million viewers per match, a 297% jump from the 767,000 average during the Qatar event. The final match alone generated an average minute streaming audience of 13.9 million viewers.

Comcast’s stock recently closed at $23.52, reflecting a slight decline. The company, which operates through segments including Residential Connectivity & Platforms, Media, and Studios, relies on its Media segment—home to Telemundo and Peacock—to drive engagement through high-profile live sports rights.
