Philipsen Ends Tour de France Drought with Stage 17 Win

Jasper Philipsen secured a dominant victory in Stage 17 of the Tour de France, breaking a string of near-misses in this year’s competition. The 28-year-old Belgian sprinter surged ahead of Mauro Schmid and Olav Kooij during the final sprint in Voiron, claiming his 11th career stage win at the event. This victory ensures he has won at least one stage in each of the last five editions of the race.

The win was orchestrated by a crucial lead-out from teammate Mathieu van der Poel. Philipsen noted that the support from van der Poel, a multiple-time classics champion and cyclocross world champion, provided a significant advantage. The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider had previously finished in the top five on five separate occasions during this Tour but had struggled to find the top step of the podium until now. Following his struggles earlier in the race, Philipsen admitted to feeling the pressure to deliver results given the team’s focus on stage wins.

The dynamic race covered 174.7 km from Chambéry to Voiron. A breakaway of six riders eventually formed after more than 100 km of racing, featuring green jersey contender Mads Pedersen. While Pedersen secured maximum points at the intermediate sprint, the peloton, including Philipsen, closed the gap in the final kilometers. Jasper Stuyven attempted a solo attack but was caught within 4 km of the finish, setting up the reduced bunch sprint.

Philipsen’s performance has implications for the green jersey standings. The 50 points earned for the victory moved him within seven points of Pedersen. Meanwhile, race leader Tadej Pogacar finished safely in the main peloton, though his team faced a setback as support rider Adam Yates lost significant time after suffering a stomach issue.
