WNBA Stars Urge Schedule Changes Following All-Star Break

The WNBA regular season resumes Tuesday following an All-Star Weekend characterized by high attendance and record ticket demand. However, the league’s rapid return to play has drawn criticism from top players regarding scheduling and recovery time.

The turnaround between the final pre-break games on Wednesday and the restart on Tuesday has left several All-Stars voicing concerns. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark noted the difficulty of the schedule, highlighting that her team played on Wednesday and faces a quick turnaround with a flight to Seattle scheduled for Monday. Nine of the 12 teams playing Tuesday also took the court less than a week ago.

Players and observers noted a lack of defensive intensity during the All-Star Game, which saw 251 total points compared to the typical league average of 170 to 180. Breanna Stewart, vice president of the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA), attributed the effort levels to the demanding schedule. Stewart emphasized the challenge of balancing rest, recovery, and the competitive nature of the event when players have such limited time off.

WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike addressed potential solutions, including financial incentives similar to those in the NBA. Currently, the new collective bargaining agreement grants participants $15,000, with an additional $20,000 for the MVP. In contrast, NBA players on the winning team receive $100,000, while losers get $25,000. Ogwumike suggested that if compensation is increased, it must be paired with a longer break, pointing out that the current format offers little rest for the participants compared to the rest of the league.

The NBA extended its All-Star break starting in the 2014–15 season to provide more than a week between games. The WNBA has seen similar complaints in the past, with Sabrina Ionescu citing the schedule as a reason for lackluster effort in last year’s exhibition. Despite the recent growth of the WNBA, the scheduling structure remains a point of contention as the second half of the season begins.

The league’s media visibility remains high through broadcast partnerships. Comcast Corporation (CMCSA), the media and technology conglomerate operating platforms like NBC Sports, recently saw its stock move to $24.19, reflecting a 5.59% increase from the previous close of $22.91. The company maintains a significant market capitalization of approximately $80.9 billion within the Communication Services sector.
