Churchill Downs Venue Sets Stage for Travers Stakes Preview

A key prep race for the summer’s most prestigious three-year-old event is set to unfold at Saratoga Race Course. The 63rd running of the Jim Dandy Stakes will serve as a critical benchmark for contenders aiming at the Travers Stakes. While the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner, Golden Tempo, is absent from the card, the race boasts a compact field of five horses featuring runners who finished second in both Triple Crown events.

Scheduled as Race 10 with a post time of 5:44 p.m. Eastern on August 1, the Grade 2 race covers a distance of 1 1/8 miles and offers a purse of $500,000. The event is named for the 1930 longshot who upset Triple Crown winner Gallant Fox at 100-1 odds, though the current field is highly competitive.

Todd Pletcher’s Renegade enters as the morning line favorite at 7-5 odds. After finishing second in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Belmont Stakes, the Into Mischief colt is a major threat. Pletcher has won this race a record eight times. He will face competition from Steve Asmussen’s Chip Honcho (3-1), a fresh face coming off a victory in the Ohio Derby and a third-place finish in the Preakness Stakes.

The ownership of Saratoga Race Course falls under Churchill Downs Incorporated, a major operator in the gaming and racing sector. The company, which manages live racing venues and online wagering platforms, is currently experiencing a downward trend in the market. Shares are trading at $82.69, reflecting a decline of 7.09% from the previous close of $89.00. The company holds a market capitalization of approximately $5.76 billion.

Rounding out the field are Silent Tactic (6-1), trained by Mark Casse, and longshot Asked and Answered (30-1). Silent Tactic returns to action after a runner-up effort in the Arkansas Derby in late March, while Antonio Arriaga’s runner is still seeking his first career win.

What to watch

  • Travers Stakes Implications: Performance in the Jim Dandy often determines favoritism for the upcoming Travers Stakes.
  • Market Movement: Churchill Downs Incorporated is down over 7% today; investors may look for commentary on attendance or handle figures from the meet.
