FSU Freshman Williams Impresses in Preseason Return from Injury

Florida State football is receiving an immediate boost from freshman linebacker Izayia Williams, who has quickly made his presence felt during training camp. After waiting over a year to take the field due to an ACL tear suffered before his senior high school season, the 6-foot-2, 226-pound recruit was cleared just prior to the start of camp. Head coach Mike Norvell noted that Williams required only one drill to energize the practice, describing his first rep as explosive and violent.

Williams brings a rare combination of size and speed to the Seminoles’ defense, attributes that helped him secure Under Armour All-American honors following his junior year of high school. During that season, he recorded 125 tackles, including 15 for loss, along with four sacks and an interception. His performance comes as the program looks to overhaul a linebacker unit that struggled with consistency during a 5-7 campaign in the previous season. While the team added transfer portal talent, Williams’ physical readiness suggests he could compete for a significant role in the depth chart.

The freshman’s rapid adjustment to live contact is a positive indicator for the defense, which faces a season opener against New Mexico State on Aug. 29. Norvell highlighted Williams’ lack of hesitation in his first practice back in full pads, a promising sign for a player recovering from a major knee injury.

Williams’ high school accolades included participation in the Under Armour All-America game, connecting his athletic development to Under Armour, Inc.. As of the latest market session, Under Armour shares were trading at $6.65, reflecting a slight decline of roughly 0.3%. The apparel manufacturer, which produces gear for high school and college athletic programs, holds a market capitalization of approximately $2.91 billion.
