Michigan Football Overhauls Strength Protocols Amid Big Ten Transition

New Comcast Corporation subsidiary NBCUniversal properties will likely feature a different physical iteration of the Michigan Wolverines this coming season. Following a winter review that revealed surprising deficiencies in the team’s physical metrics, head coach Kyle Whittingham and his staff have spent the last seven months aggressively overhauling the program’s strength and conditioning approach.

When the new staff arrived in Ann Arbor, they inherited a roster filled with highly rated recruits, including numerous four- and five-star prospects. However, the on-paper talent did not translate to weight room performance. Strength and conditioning coach Doug Elisaia discovered that baseline testing numbers were “shockingly low” and paled in comparison to the metrics the staff was accustomed to at their previous stop.

The data prompted an immediate shift in philosophy. Under the previous administration, the team avoided standard staple lifts like the bench press to mitigate shoulder injury risks, focusing instead on functional movements and daily hamstring training to prevent soft tissue damage. While well-intentioned, Whittingham and Elisaia determined that this approach left the team ill-equipped for the physical rigors of Big Ten competition.

The intensive reconditioning program appears to be yielding tangible results. Following the conclusion of summer conditioning, the team conducted another round of testing. Whittingham reported that 97% of the roster hit new personal bests, marking a significant turnaround in overall strength and conditioning levels compared to the previous season. The rapid improvement has fostered buy-in across the locker room, as players have witnessed the direct correlation between the new training regimen and their on-field performance capabilities.

As the program looks ahead, Whittingham emphasized that the standard at Michigan remains competing for championships, rejecting mediocrity for a roster of this pedigree.

What to watch

  • On-field performance: Observers should look for indicators of improved physicality and endurance during early-season non-conference matchups.
  • Injury reports: Monitor whether the new, heavier lifting regimen impacts the team’s soft tissue health compared to previous years.
  • Media exposure: Upcoming broadcasts on NBC and Peacock will provide high-definition opportunities to assess the team’s physical transformation.
