Falcons Coach Stefanski Praises Penix Jr. Amid Rehab Process

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is receiving positive public feedback from his new head coach as he works his way back from injury. Kevin Stefanski, now in his first year leading the team, recently commended the former Washington Huskies standout for his demeanor and dedication during rehabilitation.

Selected eighth overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, Penix is currently recovering from a partially torn ACL in his left knee. While he has not yet been cleared for full practice, Stefanski noted the importance of the young quarterback prioritizing his health. The coach shared his thoughts during an interview on FOX Sports Radio, a property of Fox Corporation. Stefanski emphasized that Penix has made a strong impression in the quarterback room despite his limited physical activity on the field.

The Falcons’ quarterback landscape currently features Tua Tagovailoa taking the majority of first-team repetitions. Signed as a free agent, Tagovailoa is expected to compete for the starting role once Penix is medically cleared. Stefanski observed that Penix’s drive to be great is evident in how he interacts with coaches and studies the game while sidelined.

Penix’s rookie performance in 2025 provided a glimpse of his potential before the injury cut his season short. In nine starts, he passed for 1,982 yards and nine touchdowns against three interceptions. If he can secure the starting position upon his return, he will have the opportunity to distribute the ball to offensive weapons like running back Bijan Robinson and wide receiver Drake London as the Falcons aim for contention in the NFC South.
