Shiho Kuwaki Captures First LPGA Major in Dramatic AIG Women’s Open Playoff

Shiho Kuwaki secured her maiden LPGA major victory at the 50th AIG Women’s Open, rallying from a five-shot deficit to defeat Esther Henseleit in a sudden-death playoff at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. The 23-year-old Japanese golfer prevailed on the second extra hole after Henseleit forced overtime with a dramatic 40-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole.

The tournament concluded with high drama for broadcast viewers. Henseleit held a chance to win on the first playoff hole but missed a 15-foot birdie attempt. On the second replay of the 18th, Henseleit drove into trouble and recorded a bogey, while Kuwaki found the green in regulation and two-putted for the victory.

Yealimi Noh, who began the final round with a four-shot lead, struggled early with three bogeys in her first four holes. She ultimately finished third after surrendering the lead following a bogey at the 12th, coinciding with Kuwaki’s birdie at the 13th.
