Renegade’s Jim Dandy Victory Sets Up Travers Showdown With Golden Tempo

The race for the 3-year-old championship remains wide open following a decisive performance at Saratoga Race Course. Renegade, trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., overcame a slow start to win Saturday’s Grade II Jim Dandy Stakes. The victory complicates the title bid for Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Golden Tempo, as the two colts are now slated to meet again in the Grade I Travers Stakes on August 29.

Renegade, an Into Mischief colt owned by Mike Repole and breeders Robert and Lawana Lowe, trailed by double digits early in the race. Despite sitting well off the pace set by Chip Honcho, Renegade launched a strong rally on the turn to win by a half-length. Commandment finished second, with Silent Tactic taking third. The win adds a Grade II trophy to a resume that already includes a Grade I victory in the Arkansas Derby, though Renegade has yet to defeat Golden Tempo in three attempts this year.

Golden Tempo, trained by Cherie DeVaux, skipped the Jim Dandy due to a minor illness following the Belmont Stakes. However, Repole acknowledged the rival’s status, noting that the Derby and Belmont winner currently holds the edge in the division. The upcoming Travers Stakes will serve as a critical tiebreaker before the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland in October.

These developments come during a significant weekend for the racing industry, which also featured the Arlington Million at Colonial Downs and the Grade I Clement Hirsch at Del Mar. The continued competition among top-tier horses supports handle figures at major venues operated by industry players like Churchill Downs Incorporated.

Churchill Downs Incorporated, known for its iconic Kentucky Derby venue, also operates historical racing facilities and online wagering platforms. As the racing calendar moves toward the fall championship meets, the engagement generated by rivalries like Renegade versus Golden Tempo is closely watched by operators. Shares of Churchill Downs Incorporated were trading at $83.16 on Monday, reflecting a slight decline from the previous close.

What to watch
