Travers Stakes Field Shapes Up with Golden Tempo, Renegade Leading Charge

The 157th running of the Travers Stakes is set to serve as the centerpiece of the Saratoga Race Course summer meet, scheduled for Aug. 29. The Grade 1 race, often referred to as the “Midsummer Derby,” offers a purse of $1.25 million and covers 1 ¼ miles on dirt. The event will be broadcast on Fox as the meet builds toward its traditional climax.

The anticipated field features a rematch between several notable three-year-olds. Golden Tempo, who captured both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, is a primary attraction. He will face off against Renegade, the runner-up at the Derby and the victor of the recent Jim Dandy Stakes.

Joining the favorites is Baby Vino, a 28-1 longshot who delivered a shocking performance in the Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park. Trained by Lindsay Schultz, Baby Vino secured his first Grade 1 victory by defeating Preakness winner Napoleon Solo. Commandment, trained by Brad Cox and the winner of the Florida Derby, is also pointing toward the race after a second-place finish in the Jim Dandy. Additionally, Chad Brown may enter Emerging Market, the Louisiana Derby winner, who recently finished second in an allowance race against older horses.
