Deebo Samuel Signs Incentive-Laden Deal Worth Up to $7M
Comcast Corporation-owned NBC Sports Bay Area reports that veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel has agreed to a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers that features a modest guaranteed base with substantial potential upside. The agreement comes as the franchise seeks to fill the void left by Ricky Pearsall, who is sidelined for the season due to a knee injury.
Samuel’s contract is structured with a $3.27 million fully guaranteed base salary and a $490,000 signing bonus. However, the total value of the deal can reach $7 million if the 30-year-old triggers all available performance bonuses. This “pay-for-play” structure minimizes risk for the team while offering Samuel a path to a significantly higher payday based on his availability and production.
The incentive package is tied to specific on-field achievements and team success. Availability incentives include a $20,000 bonus for every regular-season game active, totaling $340,000 for a full 17-game slate. Production escalators focus on scrimmage yards and touchdowns. Samuel can earn $200,000 for 600 to 802 combined rushing and receiving yards, or $450,000 for exceeding 803 yards. Similarly, reaching five or six touchdowns is worth $200,000, while seven or more yields $450,000. Notably, these yardage and touchdown bonuses double if the 49ers secure a playoff berth.
Additional incentives are tied to usage and special teams impact. Samuel can earn $250,000 for participating in at least 68% of the offensive snaps and another $250,000 for finishing in the top 10 in yards per kick return (with a minimum of 20 attempts). Like the production bonuses, these figures double if the team reaches the postseason. A Pro Bowl selection as a starter or backup would add another $100,000.
Currently, Comcast Corporation trades at $24.93, reflecting a slight positive movement in a challenging market. As the owner of NBCUniversal, Comcast holds broadcasting rights that rely on compelling team narratives and star performances to drive viewership for its Regional Sports Networks and national platforms.
What to watch
Investors should monitor Samuel’s snap percentage and health early in the season, as hitting the 68% threshold is required for him to unlock significant financial escalators. Additionally, the team’s playoff viability will directly impact the doubling of several key contract incentives.
