Preakness Stakes Shifts 2027 Schedule to Allow Longer Gap After Derby

The Churchill Downs Incorporated network and the broader Triple Crown series will see a significant scheduling adjustment for the 2027 racing season. The 152nd running of the Preakness Stakes is set to take place on Sunday, May 23, 2027, moving from its traditional slot on the third Saturday of May to the fourth Sunday of the month.

This rescheduling creates a three-week interval of 22 days between the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, extending the previous two-week, 14-day gap. Officials at the Maryland Jockey Club indicated that the additional time is intended to accommodate modern training methods and potentially encourage more Derby winners to compete in the middle leg of the Triple Crown. The decision follows a trend where recent Derby victors, including Sovereignty and Golden Tempo, have bypassed the Preakness to prepare for the Belmont Stakes, which occurs five weeks after the Derby.

As part of the schedule shift, the “Preakness Eve” festivities will move to Saturday, May 22, immediately following the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes card. Management expressed confidence that the move positions the series for growth by providing owners and trainers with a more forgiving timeline.

Churchill Downs Incorporated, the operator of the Kentucky Derby and a major entity in the gambling and entertainment sector, currently trades with a market capitalization of approximately $5.76 billion. Shares recently closed at $87.61, reflecting an increase of 2.65% from the previous session’s close of $85.35. The company’s portfolio extends beyond the Derby to include online wagering and regional casino gaming properties.
