Vollering Claims Stage 5 Victory as Reusser Retains Tour Lead

Dutch cyclist Demi Vollering secured a stage win at the Women’s Tour de France on Wednesday, marking a significant comeback performance. The 2023 champion executed a tactical attack on the final climbs during the 140-kilometer trek from Mâcon to Belleville-en-Beaujolais.

Vollering’s aggressive strategy on the Col de Durbize and Mont Brouilly allowed her to break away from the main pack. She ultimately edged out Switzerland’s Marlen Reusser and Polish rider Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney in a three-rider sprint to the finish. Despite Vollering’s stage success, Reusser maintained her grip on the overall race leader’s yellow jersey, holding a 12-second advantage over the Dutch rider. Niewiadoma-Phinney remains in third place, trailing the leader by 1 minute and 17 seconds.

Elsewhere in the classifications, Puck Pieterse solidified her lead in the mountains competition, securing the polka dot jersey with a substantial 23-point lead after cresting the day’s major ascents first. Lorena Wiebes, despite being dropped on the climbs, strengthened her hold on the green points jersey by winning the intermediate sprint. The race continues Friday with a highly anticipated mountaintop finish on Mont Ventoux.
