Bucs GM Reaffirms Commitment to Mayfield Amid Contract Standoff

Bucs GM Reaffirms Commitment to Mayfield Amid Contract Standoff

Despite recent public comments from quarterback Baker Mayfield suggesting he felt “disrespected” and “undervalued” by the organization, Tampa Bay Buccaneers General Manager Jason Licht insists the team’s stance on its signal-caller remains unchanged. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Licht addressed the friction regarding contract negotiations, emphasizing that the front office still views Mayfield as a franchise cornerstone.

Licht declined to delve into the specifics of the ongoing contract talks but was adamant about the organization’s positive sentiment. “We love Baker. Our feelings for Baker haven’t changed,” Licht stated, as reported by the Tampa Bay Times.

The general manager appeared to brush off any concern regarding Mayfield’s recent frustrations, attributing the comments to the quarterback’s competitive nature. “Baker, as we all know here, is a very fiery competitor who’s not afraid to speak his mind,” Licht told Fox Corporation. “I’m sure he’s disappointed, frustrated; we were too. We’re in a good place. He’s focused on having the best year of his career.”

The dispute stems from the structure of Mayfield’s current deal. He is entering the final season of a three-year, $100 million contract signed in March 2024. The Buccaneers reportedly offered a two-year extension that Mayfield did not believe reflected his market value. Last season, Mayfield posted a 63.2% completion rate, throwing for 3,693 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

For context on the media landscape covering these negotiations, Fox Corporation (NASDAQ: FOXA) is a key player in sports broadcasting. The company’s stock was recently trading at $61.87, up 6.97% from the previous close, with a market capitalization of approximately $24.44 billion.
