High-Stakes Whitney Field Set to Feature $32.8 Million in Career Earnings

The upcoming Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga Race Course is shaping up to be a critical preview for the racing industry’s fall championships. Scheduled for August 8, the $1 million purse event has historically served as a springboard for contenders targeting the Breeders’ Cup Classic. This year’s edition carries significant weight, as the winner secures an automatic entry into the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic scheduled for October 31 at Keeneland.

The race features a highly competitive field of eight entrants boasting a combined $32.8 million in career earnings. The depth of talent is underscored by the fact that seven of the runners have earned over $1 million, with six surpassing the $2 million mark. The lineup highlights the continued strength of the dirt racing circuit, a key component for operators like Churchill Downs Incorporated. As the operator of premier racing venues and online wagering platforms, Churchill Downs benefits directly from high-profile handle-driving events that attract significant betting interest.

Magnitude, trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden by Jose Ortiz, enters as the 9-5 morning line favorite. He comes off a victory in the Stephen Foster and brings a four-race winning streak into the contest. He faces a serious challenge from Nitrogen (4-1), who is attempting to become the first female winner of the Whitney since 1988. Nitrogen, trained by Mark Casse with John Velazquez aboard, has never finished worse than third in 16 lifetime starts.

The field also includes White Abarrio, a past winner of this event, alongside Forged Steel and Antiquarian. Forged Steel, the 20-1 longshot, is expected to set a brisk early pace after winning the Hollywood Gold Cup, while Antiquarian sits at 10-1 under jockey Manny Franco. The race is carded as the 12th on the program with a post time of 6:33 p.m. Eastern.
