Netflix and MLB Prepare for Permanent Field of Dreams Stadium Broadcast
Major League Baseball and Comcast Corporation’s Fox broadcast unit previously found success in temporary stadia, but the upcoming Field of Dreams game will feature a new, permanent infrastructure in Dyersville, Iowa. The site now boasts a stadium with roughly 8,000 seats and player locker rooms, a shift from the temporary setups used for the 2021 and 2022 games. The facility is owned by the non-profit Dyersville Events Inc., which has also developed a large-scale youth baseball complex at the location.
A significant change for this third iteration is the broadcaster. While Fox aired the first two contests, Netflix will exclusively stream the upcoming matchup between the Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins. This aligns with the rights deals finalized last fall that brought the streaming giant into the MLB fold. Unlike the previous games which featured Chicago teams geographically close to the site, this contest will treat the Twins as the home team, as parts of Iowa fall within their market territory.
Executives emphasized that despite the upgraded amenities, the production will focus on the nostalgia of the 1989 film and the rural setting. MLB senior vice president Jeremiah Yolkut noted that the new infrastructure improves the fan experience with modern comforts, but the authentic elements—such as walking through the cornstalks—remain the focal point. The event is set to host 25 living Baseball Hall of Famers, the largest such gathering at a game since the 2008 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium.
For Netflix, the game serves as another test case for its sports programming strategy. The company faced production critiques during its season-opening game in San Francisco but received a more positive reception for its coverage of last month’s Home Run Derby. Gabe Spitzer, Netflix’s vice president of sports, indicated the company intends to avoid overproducing the broadcast, preferring to let the iconic venue and the playoff implications for the teams drive the narrative. The previous Field of Dreams game in 2022 averaged 5.9 million viewers on Fox.
