Under Armour Announces 25% Product Cut Amid Soft Demand

Under Armour is adjusting its business strategy in response to shifting market conditions. The Baltimore-based apparel manufacturer announced it will reduce its total product lineup by 25% over the next 18 months. The company intends to shift its focus from volume to value, aiming to sell fewer items overall while increasing the percentage of products sold at full price.

The decision to streamline the portfolio accompanies a revised financial outlook for the year. Under Armour cited soft consumer demand in both the U.S. and Asia as primary factors necessitating the adjustment. This reduction in inventory and SKU count represents the latest attempt by the brand to optimize its operations and improve efficiency.

Market reaction to the news was evident in early trading. Shares of Under Armour were down approximately 4.38%, with the price settling around $6.22. The decline contributed to the company’s market capitalization of roughly $2.73 billion. The stock remains categorized within the Consumer Cyclical sector, specifically in Apparel Manufacturing.

Under Armour produces performance apparel, footwear, and accessories for men, women, and youth, offering products in compression, fitted, and loose fits. The new strategy suggests a consolidation of these offerings to focus on higher-margin core items.

What to watch

  • Future earnings reports to gauge the impact of the product reduction on revenue.
  • Guidance updates regarding consumer demand trends in North America and Asian markets.
  • Inventory levels as the company executes the 25% product cull.
