Former Washington Star Woodward Tapped as New Voice of Huskies Radio

The University of Washington has selected Elise Woodward to serve as the new radio voice for the Huskies, bringing three decades of sports broadcasting experience back to her alma mater. Woodward, a former basketball captain for the Dawgs, takes over the play-by-play duties at a pivotal moment for the program.

Woodward’s resume includes time with the Seattle Storm, the SuperSonics, and a current role as an on-call broadcaster for the Portland Fire. Her return to UW comes as the team prepares for its high-profile rivalry game, the Apple Cup. She noted to KIRO 7 that there would be no “dress rehearsal” in her new position, as she debuts during one of the season’s most-watched matchups.

The media landscape for college sports continues to shift toward major national broadcasters. The upcoming Apple Cup, set for September 6, will be televised on NBC. The broadcast is part of the extensive sports portfolio operated by Comcast Corporation. As the parent company of NBC, Comcast holds a significant market position in the Communication Services sector, with a market capitalization exceeding $87 billion. The company’s stock recently closed at $25.36, reflecting a slight upward trend in daily trading.

Following the rivalry game, Washington State University’s home opener against Duquesne on September 19 will air on USA Network, another property under the Comcast umbrella. Woodward expressed confidence that she is ready for the immediate pressure of the high-profile slot, stating she intends to “slip on that headset and be fired up.”

What to watch

  • The Apple Cup viewership ratings on NBC will serve as a barometer for national interest in the rivalry.
  • Comcast’s upcoming quarterly earnings may provide insight into the performance of its sports media segment.
