Richard Claims First U.S. All-Around Championship Title

Paris Olympic bronze medalist Fred Richard secured his first U.S. all-around championship title with a decisive performance at the event in Phoenix. Richard posted a two-day combined score of 170.015, finishing two points clear of Tokyo Olympian Shane Wiskus, while rising competitor Danila Leykin took third place with 167.001 points.

While the victory represents a significant milestone for Richard, who previously finished as the runner-up in the last two years and placed third in 2023, the competition was impacted by the absence of several key figures. Defending champion Asher Hong was sidelined by injury, and three-time U.S. champion Brody Malone sat out the season. Despite the open field, Richard faced pressure from the 19-year-old Leykin, who trailed by a slim margin of 0.153 points after the first night of competition.

The dynamic of the event shifted during the final rotation. Leykin struggled significantly on the floor exercise, landing low on his first tumbling pass and slipping on the second, resulting in a score of 11.65. This stumble effectively ended his bid for the title, allowing Richard to clinch the victory with clean performances across the remaining events.

Richard, a three-time NCAA all-around champion, celebrated his win following his vault, the final apparatus of the night. Although he did not automatically lock his spot for the U.S. team heading to the World Championships in Rotterdam by failing to place in the top three on enough individual events, he is widely expected to be named to the five-man squad.
