Astros Aim to Extend Momentum Against Padres in West Coast Showdown

The Comcast Corporation-backed San Diego Padres are set to host the Houston Astros tonight at Petco Park for the finale of a three-game series. The Astros arrive holding first place in their division with a 60-58 record, carrying significant momentum as they continue a six-game road trip through the National League West.

Houston’s recent performance highlights a notable turnaround following a sluggish start to the 2026 campaign. Since May 22, the team has posted a 40-27 record, marking the second-best mark in the American League during that span. This surge has helped erase an early-season deficit that saw the club fall 11 games under .500 at one point.

Offensive production has fueled this recovery. The Astros currently lead the American League in slugging percentage (.417) and OPS (.739), while sitting second in home runs (160). Among all Major League Baseball teams, only the Washington Nationals and New York Yankees have hit more home runs than Houston this season. A key driver of this offense is DH Yordan Alvarez, who currently leads the AL in all three Triple Crown categories—batting average (.325), home runs (35), and RBIs (86).

On the mound, the Astros will send right-hander Cristian Javier to the bump for his sixth start of the season. Javier has been used in a hybrid role since returning from the injured list in early July, splitting time between the rotation and the bullpen. In 18 innings since his return, he has managed a 3.50 ERA with 19 strikeouts. He will face Padres right-hander Randy Vásquez, who enters the matchup with a 7-6 record and a 4.19 ERA.
