White Sox Shortstop Tim Anderson Retires After 10 MLB Seasons

Tim Anderson, the two-time All-Star and 2019 American League batting champion, has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball following a 10-season career. The move comes after the former shortstop spent the majority of his tenure with the Chicago White Sox, a team currently facing a challenging rebuild phase in the competitive AL Central.

Anderson served as a cornerstone for the White Sox offense for eight seasons. He captured the league batting title in 2019 with a .335 average and followed that performance with a seventh-place finish in AL MVP voting during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Over his career in Chicago, he hit .300 or better in four separate seasons. The organization will recognize his contributions with a pregame ceremony on Sept. 17 at Rate Field before a game against the Detroit Tigers.

Among the most defining moments of Anderson’s career was his performance in the 2021 Field of Dreams Game in Iowa. He hit a walk-off home run against the New York Yankees, securing a 9-8 victory. The event was a significant media property, broadcast nationally by Fox Corporation, which holds prominent broadcasting rights for MLB. Shares of Fox are currently trading at $63.49, up 1.13%.

Anderson’s production declined significantly following a knee injury sustained in 2023 during a rundown against the Minnesota Twins. The sprained MCL affected his mechanics, and he struggled to regain his previous form at the plate, acknowledging the difficulty of adjusting his swing post-injury.

What to watch

  • Anderson’s retirement ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 17 at Rate Field.
  • The White Sox continue to rebuild their roster and on-field product.
  • Fox Corporation maintains a strong portfolio of live sports rights.
