Chicago Sky’s Carrington Addresses Flagrant Foul and Social Media Controversy

Comcast Corporation subsidiary NBC Sports is set to broadcast the upcoming matchup between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever on Aug. 23. This game has garnered added attention following an incident between Sky guard DiJonai Carrington and Fever forward Sophie Cunningham during their previous contest on Aug. 8.

Speaking to reporters prior to the Sky’s road game against the Seattle Storm on Monday, Carrington addressed the Flagrant 2 foul that resulted in her ejection. The play occurred late in the first quarter when Carrington made contact with Cunningham from behind during a fast break. Officials reviewed the play and determined the contact was unnecessary and excessive, specifically noting contact to the head and neck area.

Carrington, who returned to the court on July 30 after recovering from a foot injury, stated that the foul was not intentional. She attributed the physical play to her effort to prevent a scoring opportunity, noting that her timing and lift might still be affected by her recovery. She emphasized that while the result was unfortunate, her intent was to make a play on the ball rather than injure an opponent.

The incident sparked further discussion when Carrington posted “WHITE PRIVILEGE” on social media immediately following her ejection. She later refuted claims that the post was referencing the officiating decision. In a response to former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho, who criticized the post, Carrington clarified that she never claimed the foul assessment itself was an example of privilege. She stated that her comments were directed toward broader issues and that she had engaged with relevant parties regarding her concerns.

The Sky are scheduled to host the Fever again on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be nationally televised, providing a platform for both teams as they continue their respective seasons.
