Giants Promote Morgan to Roster Following Injury to Backup Catcher

The San Francisco Giants have added catching depth to their major league roster. On August 10, the team promoted Zach Morgan from the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats after Daniel Susac was placed on the injured list due to a fractured kneecap.

Morgan, 26, joins the team to serve as the primary backup behind Drew Cavanaugh. The promotion marks the culmination of a five-year journey in the minor leagues for the former seventh-round draft pick. Selected by the Giants in 2022 out of Lincoln High School, Morgan has compiled a career minor league slash line of .237/.337/.349 over 1,000 plate appearances. His performance has improved this season across the top two minor league levels, where he posted a .269 batting average and a .369 on-base percentage in 131 plate appearances.

The logistics of the promotion required a quick transition for the catcher. Morgan was with the River Cats in Las Vegas preparing for a series against the Aviators when he received the news. He caught a flight to San Francisco and arrived at Oracle Park during the third inning of the team’s game against the Astros.

The move is intended to fill the immediate gap left by Susac’s injury. While Morgan steps into the backup role for the Aug. 11 contest against Houston, reports indicate the Giants may look to add a more experienced veteran to handle those duties for the remainder of the season.
