The Seattle Seahawks received a positive update on their defensive lineup Tuesday, as the team announced that hybrid linebacker Nick Emmanwori has successfully passed his physical examination. This clearance allows the defensive standout to begin practicing during training camp, keeping him on schedule to be available for the Week 1 opener against the New England Patriots on Sept. 9.

Emmanwori’s status had been a point of discussion for observers following the release of the HBO “Hard Knocks” series, which aired footage of him utilizing a scooter and wearing a walking boot. However, those scenes were filmed in late July. Recent reports indicate he has been moving freely without a brace, wearing shoes resembling those made by Crocs, Inc., while observing teammates.

The procedure in July was an arthroscopic repair on his right ankle. The injury originally occurred just days before Super Bowl 60 in February, though Emmanwori played 70 of 72 defensive snaps in that contest. He participated fully in the team’s offseason program, but opted for surgery in late June when the ankle did not respond as expected. During his absence, veteran D’Anthony Bell and rookie second-round pick Bud Clark have handled the hybrid “big nickel” defensive responsibilities.
