MLB Attendance Boosted by Creative Giveaways and Unique Promotions

Major League Baseball is seeing a resurgence in fan attendance this season, with creative stadium giveaways playing a significant role in drawing crowds. The league-wide average attendance has reached 29,618 through the latest slate of games, marking the highest full-season average since 2017.

Teams are moving beyond standard promotions to offer unique items that generate buzz. The Chicago White Sox recently distributed pope-themed hats to a crowd of 38,113, paying tribute to Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native and fan of the team. This event helped push the club’s total season attendance to 1,460,383, exceeding its entire 2025 total of 1,445,738.

Other clubs have adopted similar strategies. The Texas Rangers handed out a Nolan Ryan “bloody lip” jersey, while the Milwaukee Brewers distributed 25,000 bar dice sets to fans 21 and over, coinciding with a crowd of 40,625 at American Family Field. Bobbleheads remain a staple, with teams offering variants like a Brandon Nimmo “Bull Riding” figure and a butter-churning Nick Kurtz model.

The demand for these items is not limited to the ballparks. Secondary market activity has heated up, with fans turning to platforms like eBay Inc. to purchase and sell rare promotional items. eBay, currently trading down 3.62% with a market capitalization of approximately $49.83 billion, serves as a key marketplace for this type of collectible.

While rule changes like the pitch clock are often credited with improving the pace of play, executives emphasize that distinct giveaways are essential for moving the needle. The Arizona Diamondbacks noted that there is an increased necessity across the league to think outside the box, as standard items no longer suffice to drive ticket sales.

What to watch

  • Upcoming White Sox promotions include wooden domino sets on Aug. 22 and magic wands on Sept. 4.
  • Continued secondary market activity for limited-edition stadium giveaways.
  • Full-season attendance figures compared to the 2017 benchmark.
