New Kentucky Wildcats head coach Will Stein may look to leverage his West Coast ties to secure a commitment from one of the nation’s top rising talents. Kaleb “KJ” Herndon, an incoming freshman at Santa Margarita Catholic, has emerged as a premier prospect in the 2030 class, drawing significant attention from major college programs before playing a down of high school football.

Standing 6 feet 5 inches and weighing 235 pounds, Herndon has already generated substantial buzz. He recently participated in the Under Armour Next Camp Series in Los Angeles, serving as the only 2030 invitee at the regional event. Competing against offensive linemen from the 2027 class, the young edge rusher held his own, showcasing the physical frame and motor that appeal to recruiters.

The recruitment landscape for Herndon is already crowded. Oregon, where Stein previously served as offensive coordinator, was the first to extend an offer, but the list has grown rapidly. Herndon holds scholarships from Texas A&M, USC, UCLA, Miami, Ole Miss, and Texas Tech. He reportedly received six offers in a single four-day stretch this spring.

Stein’s familiarity with the Southern California recruiting circuit positions Kentucky to be a legitimate player for Herndon’s services. Wildcats edge coach Tony Washington, Jr., a California native, adds another layer of connection to the prospect. Herndon is set to play in the Trinity League, a conference known for producing high-level talent, which will provide a rigorous testing ground as he develops.
