MLB Announces Red Sox vs. Royals for 2027 Field of Dreams Game

Major League Baseball has scheduled the next installment of its showcase in Dyersville, Iowa, for Aug. 12, 2027, featuring a matchup between the Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals. The contest, designated as a home game for the Royals, marks the fourth time the league will utilize the temporary stadium adjacent to the iconic movie site.

Broadcasting rights for the 2027 event will shift from streaming platforms back to traditional television, with the game airing on NBC. This follows the 2026 game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins, which was streamed exclusively on Netflix. The move to NBC places the event under the umbrella of Comcast Corporation, the media and technology conglomerate that owns the broadcast network.

Logistically, the Thursday night game in Iowa will serve as the opener of a three-game series. Following an off day on Friday, the teams will travel to Kansas City to resume play at Kauffman Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 14.

League executives highlighted the regional and nostalgic significance of the pairing. Kansas City’s president of business operations, Cullen Maxey, noted that the Royals’ existing territory includes the Midwest and Dyersville, making the location a “natural fit.” Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy emphasized the event’s ability to blend the sport’s evolution with its deep-rooted traditions.

Previous Field of Dreams games have included the Chicago White Sox defeating the New York Yankees in 2021 and the Chicago Cubs topping the Cincinnati Reds in 2022.

What to watch

  • The shift of broadcast rights from Netflix to NBC for the 2027 event.
  • Advertising and sponsorship revenue generated by the unique venue format.
