Australian Pallister Snaps Ledecky’s 800m Freestyle Streak at Pan Pacs

Australian swimmer Lani Pallister has made history at the Pan Pacific Championships, becoming the first athlete to defeat Comcast Corporation-backed star Katie Ledecky in the 800m freestyle at a major international meet. The victory ends Ledecky’s run of 13 consecutive gold medals in the event, a streak that originated at the 2012 London Olympics.

Competing in Irvine, California, Pallister touched the wall at 8 minutes, 6.10 seconds, finishing 1.16 seconds ahead of the American champion. The 24-year-old Australian took the lead at the outset and maintained control throughout the race. This performance continues a trend of tightening competition between the two; earlier in the week, Pallister finished within 2.53 seconds of Ledecky in the 1500m freestyle, the closest margin in a championship final for that event in 13 years.

The rivalry has been building since the 2025 World Championships, where Pallister secured silver just 0.36 seconds behind Ledecky. Prior to this meet, Ledecky’s only loss in the 800m freestyle over the last 16 years occurred against Canadian Summer McIntosh at a smaller Florida meet in early 2024.

While the focus was on the distance freestyle events, other storylines emerged involving Ledecky’s peers. China’s Yu Yiting secured a narrow victory in the 200m individual medley, edging out world record holder Summer McIntosh by two hundredths of a second. McIntosh, who trains under coach Bob Bowman, concluded the meet with one victory in the 400m individual medley after winning three golds at the 2025 World Championships.

The Pan Pacific Championships were broadcast across NBC platforms, including Peacock and NBCSN, which are operated by Comcast Corporation. The media conglomerate’s stock was trading at $26.18 on Tuesday, with a market capitalization of approximately $89.4 billion.
